What would happen if all satellites stopped working?

What would happen if all satellites stopped working?

We don’t always realise how much we depend on satellites

orbitingour planet. Our space correspondent imagines the

impact on the planet if we completely lost transmission.

Threats to this space infrastructure are real, and governments around the world are beginning to think seriously about improving the resilience of the systems we rely on. To focus their thoughts, and with a nod to that pioneer of threats from space, Orson Welles, here is what might happen if we suddenly encountered a day without satellites…

There was nothing sudden. Planes did not fall out of the sky, the lights didn’t go out or the water supplies fail. At least, not at first.

Some things did stop working straightaway but, for most people, they were more an inconvenience than anything else. The loss of television satellites meant that many families missed the cheery rehearsed smiles of breakfast TV presenters, and were forced to talk to each other over their cereal instead. There were no foreign correspondents on the radio, no results of the latest international sports fixtures.

But outside, the loss of global satellite communications was putting the world in danger. At a bunker somewhere in the United States, a pilot squadron lost contact with the armed drones they were flying over the Middle East. The failure of secure satellite communications systems left soldiers, ships and aircraft cut off from their commanders and vulnerable to attack. Without satellites, world leaders struggled to talk to each other to diffuse mounting global tensions.

Meanwhile, over the Atlantic, thousands of passengers watched movies, oblivious to the difficulties on the flight deck as pilots struggled to talk to air traffic control. Without satellite phones, container ships in the Arctic, fishermen in the China Sea and aid workers in the Sahara found themselves isolated from the rest of the world.

As people started work in their offices in Tokyo, Shanghai, Moscow, London and New York, they found it difficult to talk to colleagues in other countries. Email worked and the internet seemed okay, but many international phone calls failed. The rapid communications systems that tied the world together were unravelling. Rather than shrinking, it seemed as if the Earth was getting larger.

"An SMS portal for farmers soon in INDIA"

An SMS portal for farmers that will enable them to plan farming operations and taking the best suited action to deal with adverse weather conditions will be launched on July 16 by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The Kisaan Portal aims at reaching information, advisories and services through SMS to more than 12 crore farmers across the country, said officials of the agriculture ministry.

Farmers will need to register for this service by calling Kisaan Call Centre on the toll free number 1800-180-1551 or through the web portal.

SMS

Being an instant and non-intrusive medium of communication, the SMS advisories and alerts will enable farmers to take informed decisions relating to different aspects of farming including crop production and marketing, animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries.

"They can also opt to receive SMS messages customised to their specific requirements".SMS advisories will include soil test results, selection of fertilizer and its dosage, and also information on various programmes so that farmers can make the best use of assistance and know-how being made available by the government.

"Timely market information provided through SMS will give the farmer better bargaining power and they will be in a position to take better decisions about sale of produce" .

Officers of various departments, experts and scientists in research institution and in the field will use this portal for disseminating information, giving topical and seasonal advisories to farmers in their local languages.

Microsoft 3D touchscreen

It includes an LCD flat panel screen with force sensors and a robotic arm that moves it back and forwards and by controlling how much resistance there is to a user's fingertip the device can simulate the shape and weight of objects shown on screen, BBC reports.

Software giant Microsoft has reportedly developed a 3D touchscreen that shows images which can be felt and manipulated.

It includes an LCD flat panel screen with force sensors and a robotic arm that moves it back and forwards and by controlling how much resistance there is to a user's fingertip the device can simulate the shape and weight of objects shown on screen, BBC reports.
According to the report, Microsoft said that the device can have both medical and gaming uses.
Senior researcher Michael Pahud said that when the finger pushes on the touchscreen and the senses merge with stereo vision, if convergence is done correctly and visuals are updated constantly so that they correspond to the finger's depth perception, it will be enough for the brain to accept the virtual world as real.

The report said that the company has created a demonstration using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a brain to show how a medic could navigate through the different slices by pushing their finger against the display allowing them to draw notes and leave a ‘haptic detent’, or force-feedback marker - at certain layers to make it easier to find them again later on.
Pahud said that the ‘haptic detent’ can be extended to flag up potential problems is encountering an anomaly like a tumour, because one can change the response based on what they touch.
Dr Peter Weller, head of the Centre for Health Infomatics at City University, London, is concerned that Microsoft's screen would not be able to give an accurate enough indication of textures because if it was going to be used in the real world it would have to respond to rapidly changing shapes.
Weller further said that if technology like Tactus, which has developed a screen with tiny channels of fluid which allows bumps to pop up to simulate the feel of button, is combined with Microsoft’s innovation it could prove useful for a doctor to do teleconsultancy work adding that it would mean the patient could be in another country or hospital and the doctor could feel their glands or abdomen from a distance, the report added.

Pirate Bay founder creating surveillance-free messaging app

In the wake of people learning about the National Security Agency's massive surveillance program, it's become clear that phone records and text messages are not entirely private.
The Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde and a couple of app developers have decided to do something about it. They are working on creating a messaging app that is spy-proof, according to GigaOM.

"All communication on today's networks is being monitored by government agencies and private companies. The politicians are not going to stop it.

POOL PC

The Pool PC was designed and invented by Barry Lai Yin Lock for the NextGen PC Design Competition. It's not yet on the market, but this waterproof PC is feasible, made from low-density (floatable) waterproof plastics and solar-powered, which abolishes the need to plug in. While most computers need a fan to keep the processing unit cool, this PC uses the pool water it's floating on to cool it, instead. The touchable user interface eliminates the need for a keyboard, which would create air pockets and places for water to seep in. It includes a GPS device (in case you get lost at sea), Bluetooth wireless and Internet access. Not only that, but it includes a stretchable attachment so that it can fit to any size of pool ring or inner tube.If you believe in the health benefits of magnets, you'll want to relax on our number one home invention.

How to maintain your system

In this post  i am going to explain how to  maintain your pc first  10 point i am going to explaine about the maintance of your hardware then i will explain how to protect your pc from virus and other malware

Maintaince of  your pc hardware:

1)Many people will recognize that the pc would have turned off suddenly .It is mainly because of    overheating  of your pc.Overheating has various ill effect such as it will reduce the processing speed of your cpu or it will reduce the performance of  your pc .If over  heating prevails for a long time then it may cause several  ill effects such as hardware malfuction etc..

Mains reasons for over heating of pc:

1) One of the main reasons for overheating is due to virus if your system is infected by virus then it may over heat i will explain how to protect your pc from virus later..

2)If your heat sinke is spoiled or it has lost the power of  lubricant that it contain to reduce heat .Then your  pc  may over heat

3)If your cover the air vent of you pc my keeping in bed or other spongy surfaces then is no way for the air to circulate so your pc may over heat...

4)If your circulating fans of your pc is repaired then your pc may over heat

5)If you continusly charge your system while watching movies in your pc then charging and discharging occurs continusly so it heats your pc

Main reasons of hard disk failure:

If your hard disk fails  then you will get a message stating that HARD DISK FAILED during the boot time of your pc .

1)First reasons of hard disk failure is when you when u press the power button of your laptop while the cpu is doing some process so your lense might get damaged

2)It can occur due  to flow of high voltage in your  pc so whenever  you charge your laptop  connect your  charger to a spike buster not directly to the plug point

HOW DOES UR GET INFECTED BY VIRUS:

Millions of virus are going every day. When your online u expose your vulnerabilities to the malicious software that are growing rapidly or when u click u visite prone site it contains ton and ton of virus .When you download malicous links your system get installed in your pc or when you insert your pen drive in a virus affected system etc  internet is one of the major propragation of  virus and germs

How do hackers emed the virus ?
useually when you download a video from a malicious sight the video might be normal  be normal but it  the cyber  criminals useually use a virus binder software and bind the virus.exe  file to the video so when u run this video it would be normal but the virus.exe would be deleting your files in c drive or  it will infect your windows program files ..
this is video that tells you about the diff kinds of virus
SIGNS OF VIRUS IN YOUR SYSTEM
1)If your  sytem run slower than normal then  there is a sign of virus in ur system because the virus process might be running so it will slow other process

2)If there is a change in the drive icon of your system  instead of a drive icon there might be some doc icon

3)If your  pc display some messages such AS "DISK DRIVE NOT FOUND" etc

4)If you notice that file sizes are fluctuating even if you aren't accessing those

5)If your computer has become unstable, that's a sign that something's wrong. Some malware messes with important files that keep your computer running properly..That could cause your computer to crash. If your computer crashes when you try to run a specific application or open a particular file, that tells you that something has corrupted the data. It could be malware.

ABOVE MENTONED SIGN OCCURS IN WINDOWS INSTALLES PC .If you  have installed linux os in  you pc then you are virus free...

THE BELOW VIDEO EXPAINS HOW TO REMOVE ALLYOUR VIRUS IN THE SYSTEM

Fingerprint Scan May Soon Be Required To Get New SIM Cards

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has proposed a notion that might make mandatory for telecom operators to take fingerprint scan before issuing new SIM cards to customers. Home ministry has suggested Dot to maintain a central database which will contain the biometric data of all subscribers. The database can be linked to the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), so all the data remains in one place, for the sake of National security.
According to a report by economic times, an official has said that the department will be discussing the matter with all stakeholder,s including telecom service providers, to reach a conclusion. The official adds that the present verification systems is not up to the mark due to competition among retailers to sell more SIM cards.
Last year, DoT made it mandatory for telecom service providers to physically verify an applicant before issuing a SIM card. However, there have been complaints from authorities across the country that the retailers have not been verry respective of this, as there is no strict action from the service providers. According to an official, terrorists and criminals have been taking advantage of this and procuring SIM cards by forging fake documents.

Father of The Mouse

Douglas Engelbart, father of the mouse, dies at 88

Engelbart had suffered from poor health and died peacefully in his sleep, his daughter, Christina,
 told friends in an email.

Douglas C. Engelbart, a technologist who conceived of the computer mouse and laid out a vision of an Internet decades before others brought those ideas to the mass market, died on Tuesday night.

He was 88. Engelbart had suffered from poor health and died peacefully in his sleep, his daughter, Christina, told friends in an email. Engelbart arrived at his crowning moment relatively early in his career, on a winter afternoon in 1968, when he delivered an hour-long presentation containing so many far-reaching ideas that it would be referred to decades later as the "mother of all demos."
Speaking before an audience of 1,000 leading technologists in San Francisco, Engelbart, a computer scientist at the Stanford Research Institute, showed off a cubic device with two rolling discs called an "X-Y position indicator for a display system."
It was the mouse's public debut. Engelbart then summoned, in real-time, the image and voice of a colleague 30 miles away. That was the first videoconference. And he explained a theory of how pages of information could be tied together using text-based links, an idea that would later form the bedrock of the Web's architecture.
At a time when computing was largely pursued by government researchers or hobbyists with a countercultural bent, Engelbart never sought or enjoyed the explosive wealth that would later become synonymous with Silicon Valley success.
He never received any royalties for the mouse, for instance, which SRI patented and later licensed to Apple Computer. He was intensely driven instead by a belief that computers could be used to augment human intellect. In talks and papers, he described with zeal and bravado a vision of a society in which groups of highly productive workers would spend many hours a day collectively manipulating information on shared computers.
"The possibilities we are pursuing involve an integrated man-machine working relationship, where close, continuous interaction with a computer avails the human of radically changed information-handling and -portrayal skills," he wrote in a 1961 research proposal at SRI. His work, he argued with typical conviction, "competes in social significance with research toward harnessing thermonuclear power, exploring outer space, or conquering cancer."
By 2000, Engelbart had won prestigious accolades including the National Medal of Technology and the Turing Award. He lived in comfort in Atherton, a leafy suburb near Stanford University. At the same time, he wrestled with his fade into obscurity even as technology entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates built fortunes off of the personal computer and became celebrity billionaires by realizing some of his early ideas. In 2005, he told Tom Foremski, a technology journalist, that he felt the last two decades of his life had been a "failure" because he could not receive funding for his research or "engage anybody in a dialogue."
Douglas Carl Engelbart was born on Jan. 30, 1925 in Portland to a radio repairman father and a homemaker mother. He enrolled at Oregon State University, but was drafted into the U.S. Navy and shipped to the Pacific before he could graduate. He resolved to change the world as a computer scientist after coming across a 1945 article by Vannevar Bush, the head of the US Office of Scientific Research, while scouring a Red Cross library in a native hut in the Philippines, he told an interviewer years later.
After returning to the United States to complete his degree, Engelbart took a teaching position at the University of California, Berkeley, after Stanford declined to hire him because his research seemed too removed from practical applications. He took a job at SRI in 1957, and by the early-1960s Engelbart led a team had begun to seriously investigate tools for interactive computing.
After coming back from a computer graphics conference in 1961, Engelbart sketched a design and tasked Bill English, an engineering colleague, to carve a prototype out of wood. Engelbart's team considered other designs, including a device that would be affixed to the underside of a table and controlled by the knee, but the desktop mouse won out. SRI would later license the technology for $40,000 to Apple, which released the first commercial mouse with its Lisa computer in 1983.
By the late 1970s, Engelbart's research group was acquired by a company called Tymshare, and he struggled to secure funding for his work or return to the same heights of influence. In his later years he founded a management seminar program called the Bootstrap Institute with his daughter Christina. He is survived by Karen O'Leary Engelbart, his second wife, and four children: Gerda, Diana, Christina and Norman. His wife Ballard died in 1997.
